This drug, (oxybutinin chloride), is often used to improve bladder control in MS. A bladder that has poor nerve supply may not store much urine, needing to empty frequently. Providing your bladder empties satisfactorily, Ditropan will be helpful increasing bladder capacity and reducing frequency of voiding. As an antispasmodic, Ditropan is also useful following supra-pubic catheterization, where the bladder may be unsettled.
Ditropan is a smooth muscle relaxant, (Clinically it often takes at least 24 hours before the full benefits are noted.) This type of muscle is found in the bladder, gut, salivary glands and eyes. It does not effect skeletal muscle.
The unwanted effects of the drug are dose- dependent so they don't always occur.Technically speaking, they are due to the anticholinergic properties of the drug on the other smooth muscles. This may be dry mouth, dizziness or difficulty focusing and constipation. Glaucoma and bowel problems are contraindications.
