Fatigue is typically managed from physical therapy, occupational therapy, and pharmacological perspectives.
If stimulants such as Provigil®, Cylert® (pemoline) or Symmetrel® (amantadine) are prescribed for fatigue management, administration prior to anticipated sexual activity may be helpful.
Having sex in the morning, when energy levels are higher, can compensate for fatigue. In addition, exploring sexual positions that minimize weight bearing or tiring movements can minimize fatigue.
Physical therapy can be helpful by teaching energy conservation techniques that can leave more energy available for intimate play.
Occupational therapy can help the person with MS with selection or modification of equipment that can conserve energy.
Aggressive treatment of MS-related fatigue, accompanied by open communication and the willingness to engage in trial-and-error exploration are essential ingredients.
