Adhesion molecules are found on the surface of cells and help cells 'stick' together. They are important in MS because they are involved in inflammation. At the sites of inflammation, cells lining the blood vessels produce adhesion molecules which 'capture' passing white blood cells. The white blood cells are then able to enter the brain and attack myelin. Researchers hope that blocking the action of adhesion molecules will prove to be a useful treatment for MS.
