Multiple sclerosis (literally, "many scars") is a disease of the central nervous system. The demyelination of the myelin sheath which coats the nerves impedes the transmission of signals from the brain. Most people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis will experience relapses in which the number of symptoms is increased. The main patterns which multiple sclerosis takes are: relapsing/remitting; chronic progressive; secondary progressive; and benign. For further details see MS The Disease
