Receptors are chemicals which bind selectively to other chemicals (called ligands) in a similar way to a lock and key. The receptor is the 'lock' that can only be opened by a specific ligand 'key'. Receptors are usually found on the surface of cells. When a ligand binds to its receptor it often triggers a response in the 'activated'
