Stem cells are cells that can both reproduce themselves and develop into many different cell types. There is the potential to use stem cells to grow different types of cell on demand e.g. to grow new nerve cells. However, this research is still at the earliest stages. Researchers still don't know which chemical signals are needed to control cell growth.
