Writing your profile – guidelines

Anonymity and privacy
- Although you need to register to submit a personal profile, anyone who has Internet access can read it. For this reason MSIF recommend that use only your first name or an alias (nickname), and avoid giving information in your profile that may point to your identity.
- If you would like to hear from other people with MS click in the box that says ‘I would like my email address displayed on my personal profile’. Never include your email, home address or phone number within the actual text of your Profile. If you enter into correspondance with others via this website, think twice before giving them any further personal contact details (telephone numbers, addresses etc...). Remember people online may not be who they say they are. Arranging to meet people can be dangerous, if you do choose to meet someone make sure a friend or family member knows exactly what you are doing.
- Your email is not disclosed and is required only for registration so that you can access your Profile to amend it. Messages are sent via a form without using your email address. You can choose not to receive messages from other users by ticking the 'Allow others to contact me' checkbox in the 'My account details ' section of your profile.
- You should be aware that if you choose to display your email address on any public access website, including on your People Profile, it can be found and used by advertisers to send unsolicited mail. This is not true of registration details that you choose to send only to MSIF. However, your email address will not be viewable to others. If you email someone using ‘Click to contact’ button, when they receive your email, your email address will be viewable to them.
Unwelcome, spam or scam messages
If you receive any of the above you can use the 'block user' function in the message centre to prevent messages from particular users. MSIF monitors blocked users on a daily basis and will investigate those users with multiple blocks against their account. To help protect your community please use the above function or email info@msif.org.
Presenting your story
Your story can be as long or as short as you like. You can type straight into the box on the screen or you can cut and paste from your word processor. Bear in mind that fonts and formatting you use will be replaced by MSIF standard typefaces.
Editing
All profiles will be read by an MSIF editor before publication and MSIF reserves the right to reject or edit any material that we think is inappropriate or could cause offence to our other users. MSIF may also amend profiles for spelling and grammar. As English is not the first language of many users, this can often help to make profiles clearer and more understandable.
