Age:34 Country: Thailand Occupation: Quality Control Manager
Hi everyone, my name is Mohammad. I am 34 years old and I live in Bangkok, Thailand, but was born in Syria. I was diagnosed with MS in 1998 when I was 26 years old.
The first attack of MS was really acute. The right side of my body and my hands became weaker and were numb. I could not raise my hands and I felt weak and spastic. My mouth could not chew. It came as a complete shock to me.
I went to the private hospital in Bangkok but the doctors did not know what was wrong with me. They did everything they could, but I was the first patient with MS they had seen at that hospital. I believe that the average Thai person has never heard of MS. So I decided to send my soft tissue to Germany and the United States for examination, which resulted in my diagnosis with MS.
When I first knew that I had MS, I had no self-confidence and got really depressed. It was so unexpected and unpleasant that it made me extremely upset. But, it also gave me a sense of the power of living. I believed that everyone with MS has gone through similar circumstances. I don’t want anyone to think MS is a cause to lose hope or confidence and urge people with MS not to let this set-back dishearten them. It may be hard for you, your family, friends, and others who love and care you, but together you can live and fight against MS.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself. I have made a rule of eating well, exercising, and getting rid of stress. I believe it is important to realize that you are your own doctor when you are at home and to try and continue living life the same as always. I have also found that using a QRS magnetic field mat has helped relieve some of my symptoms.
At the present time there are many people with MS in Thailand, both Thai and from different countries. It was suggested that we should combine as a group and set up an MS patients’ club. We proposed our objective to Paul Rompani, MSIF’s Deputy Chief Executive, who suggested a procedure for setting up the club. He introduced us to potential sponsors in Thailand, who have since agreed to help us. The main activity proposed for the club is the discussion of symptoms, experience, treatment, knowledge and prevention of attack with MS. We would also like to use funds to help people with MS whose salaries are not high enough to cover medical treatment. Some people may have economic support from the state government or have insurance in case of emergency.
To finish, I want to tell everyone don’t forget we are friends and it is nice to know you are reading this from the MSIF website all around the world. I will do my best for people with MS in Thailand and from different countries. Welcome to our warm country, Thailand!
