Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Brain damage as detected by magnetization transfer imaging is less pronounced in benign than in early relapsing multiple sclerosis.

This study demonstrates that lesional and non-lesional magnetization transfer ratio values (a parameter that estimates the amount of tissue damage occurring in multiple sclerosis) can be significantly less pronounced in benign multiple sclerosis than in a cohort of RR patients at their earliest disease stages, suggesting that brain tissue damage is milder in benign multiple sclerosis than in early RR disease. This can be due to an extraordinary beneficial response to demyelination of benign patients and may represent the evidence that benign multiple sclerosis truly exists and might be differentiated from other forms of this illness.

The value of animal models for drug development in multiple sclerosis.

In this paper the authors suggest some potential explanations based on new thinking about key pathogenic concepts and differences that may limit extrapolation from the rodent model for multiple sclerosis, experimental allergic (autoimmune) encephalomyelitis to multiple sclerosis. To try to circumvent these rodent-human dissimilarities more systematically, they propose that pre-clinical trials should be started in humanized mouse models.

Chemokine expression by astrocytes plays a role in microglia/macrophage activation and subsequent neurodegeneration in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.

This study demonstrates that two chemokines, MCP-1/CCL2 and IP-10/CXCL10 produced by astrocytes, may activate astrocytes and direct reactive gliosis. Targeting chemokines especially in secondary progressive MS may therefore be a powerful therapeutic approach to inhibit lesional expansion.

Continued administration of ciliary neurotrophic factor protects mice from inflammatory pathology in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

This study demonstrates that murine ciliary neurotrophic factor inhibits inflammation in the spinal cord, resulting in amelioration of the clinical course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, an experimental model of MS, during time of treatment.

Effect of the treatment with methylprednisolone on the cerebrospinal fluid and serum levels of CCL2 and CXCL10 chemokines in patients with active multiple sclerosis.

This study shows that the clinical improvement of active MS following the treatment with methylprednisolone is associated with the modification of cerebrospinal fluid levels of CCL2 and CXCL10, suggesting that these chemokines may be useful markers of response to treatment and relapses in MS patients.
