Focal cortical atrophy in multiple sclerosis: Relation to lesion load and disability

This study found areas of loss of grey matter in people with MS which was related to the number of white matter lesions and found even in people with low levels of disability. The pattern of loss was different to that seen in normal ageing and the authors suggest this could be due to the underlying white matter lesions.

Autoantibody-mediated demyelination depends on complement activation but not activatory Fc-receptors

This study clarifies the role of antibodies in demyelination in the mouse model of MS by showing that they exert their action through activation of complement rather than via T-cells.

Absence of aquaporin-4 expression in lesions of neuromyelitis optica but increased expression in multiple sclerosis lesions and normal-appearing white matter

This study compares findings in MS and neuromyelitis optica, a severe form of demyelination which affects the optic nerves and spinal cord. They found differing expression of a protein found in the blood-brain barrier suggesting that the disease mechanisms may be different.

Increased serum levels of soluble CD14 indicate stable multiple sclerosis

The authors looked at blood levels of an immune receptor and found them to be higher in MS than controls but lower with increasing disease activity. The authors hypothesize that it may therefore have a protective role.
