The work group for MSIF's online community, My World of MS, held a two-day meeting at the Danish MS Society, Copenhagen, Denmark at the end of June, 2006. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the next steps in development.

Costs and quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis in Europe

This pan-European study involving 13,186 people explored quality of life and economic costs of the condition. It was found that around one third retired early due to MS, and the mean cost for supporting each patient was 18,000 to 62,000 Euros per year.

Cord atrophy separates early primary progressive and relapsing remitting MS

After comparing brain atrophy, brain MTR and cord atrophy in patients with early PP and RR MS, this study found that cord atrophy was present in the PPMS group only. This is consistent with the fact that most PPMS patients present with problems in the spinal cord.

Grading cervical cord damage in neuromyelitis optica and MS by diffusion tensor MRI

This paper studied diffusion tensor imaging findings in patients with MS, Neuromyelitis optica, and healthy controls. The scan findings were associated with the functional ability of patients.

Long-term favorable response to interferon beta-1b is linked to cytokine deviation toward the Th2 and Tc2 sides in Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis

This study investigated the immunology underlying long-term treatment with interferon and found certain cytokine chemical profiles were associated with a better response to treatment.

Intrathecal IgM production at clinical onset correlates with a more severe disease course in multiple sclerosis

This paper suggests that IgM levels in the spinal fluid of patients at the onset of MS symptoms may be a guide to their prognosis over the next 15 years.

Plans for MS research conference in Madrid almost complete

Aimed at people affected by MS, health professionals and MS society staff and volunteers, the Asociación Española de Esclerosis Múltiple (AEDEM) and the Federación Española para la Lucha contra la Esclerosis Múltiple (FELEM) are working with MSIF and the European Multiple Sclerosis Platform to organize a one-day conference in Madrid on Tuesday 26 September, the day before ECTRIMS 2006.
