Making Connections

MSIF Nicholson Award for caregivers - call for nominations

MSIF will soon be gathering nominations for this year's Nicholson Award for International Caregiver of the Year. This award is presented to a caregiver who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and devotion in the support of a loved one.

The award is named in honour of Evie Nicholson, Reid Nicholson's wife, and is given annually by MSIF. Reid, former Chairman of the Persons with MS International Committee, is now a member of the National Board of Directors for the Canadian National MS Society as Chair of Client Services.

If you know someone who deserves this award, please ask your national MS society to nominate them. For more information please click here.

Effects of pregnancy and child birth on urinary symptoms and urodynamics in women with multiple sclerosis

This retrospective study looked at the effect of pregnancy and childbirth on urinary symptoms in women with MS. They found no significant differences in urinary symptoms or urodynamic measures between women with or without children.

Motor assessment of upper extremity function and its relation with fatigue, cognitive function and quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients

Long-term favorable response to interferon beta-1b is linked to cytokine deviation toward the Th2 and Tc2 sides in Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis

This study investigated the immunology underlying long-term treatment with interferon and found certain cytokine chemical profiles were associated with a better response to treatment.

Dysregulated T cell expression of TIM3 in multiple sclerosis.

This study looked at the cerebrospinal fluid of people with MS and found abnormal regulation of a protein associated with the immune system’s Th1 helper cells, which usually help to promote tolerance (prevention of the immune system attacking itself). The authors hypothesise that this contributes to the autoimmune pathogenesis of MS.

Effects of interferon-beta on oligodendroglial cells

This rat study investigated the effect of interferon on oligodendrocytes, the remyelinating cells of the central nervous system. They found only an indirect effect of interferon on differentiation of oligodendrocytes from their precursors in the presence of other cells, astrocytes and microglia, which needs to be clarified with human studies.
