The role of Vitamin D in Multiple Sclerosis

This study reviews the literature about the role of vitamin D in the prevention and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The authors conclude that vitamin D supplementation may help prevent the development of MS and may be a useful addition to therapy. However, current studies are in small populations and are confounded by other variables, such as additional vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Interferon beta-1a treatment in childhood and juvenile-onset multiple sclerosis

In this study the authors assess the safety and tolerability of subcutaneous interferon beta-1a at different doses in 24 children with clinically definite multiple sclerosis. Although effectiveness cannot be inferred from this study, the authors observe a significant reduction in the relapse rate at 22 microg, three times weekly, in the relapsing-remitting subgroup.

Fatigue in multiple sclerosis persists over time : A longitudinal study

This study investigates changes in fatigue in a large cohort of MS patients in order to determine the relationship between changes in disability and depression with changes in fatigue severity. The authors show that fatigue in MS persists over time. Changes in mood status but not in disability are related to changes in fatigue in MS patients.

Costs and quality of life in multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study in the United States

This study estimates current costs and quality of life (utility) of patients treated with disease modifying drugs (DMDs) in the United States, and investigates the effect of disease severity on costs and utility. Consistent with other studies, costs and utilities are significantly correlated with functional capacity. The proportion of costs represented by disease modifying drugs is considerably lower than estimated in other studies, as all costs related to the disease are included.

Imaging of CNS myelin by positron-emission tomography

In this study the authors provide evidence that (11)C-radiolabeled BMB, a synthesized fluorescent molecule, that binds selectively to myelin both ex vivo and in vivo, can be used in vivo to image central nervous system myelin by positron-emission tomography in baboon. These results provide a perspective for developing a brain myelin imaging technique by positron-emission tomography.
