Imaging of CNS myelin by positron-emission tomography

In this study the authors provide evidence that (11)C-radiolabeled BMB, a synthesized fluorescent molecule, that binds selectively to myelin both ex vivo and in vivo, can be used in vivo to image central nervous system myelin by positron-emission tomography in baboon. These results provide a perspective for developing a brain myelin imaging technique by positron-emission tomography.

Regenerative and immunomodulatory potential of mesenchymal stem cells.

In this paper the authors discuss mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) highlighting their potential for regenerative and immunoregulatory cell therapy. MSCs appear to be a very promising tool also for MS.

Nodal, paranodal and juxtaparanodal axonal proteins during demyelination and remyelination in multiple sclerosis.

In this paper the authors suggest that a defect of Voltage-gated sodium channels aggregation might be involved in the remyelination failure in demyelinated lesions with spared axons and oligodendroglial cells.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Multiple Sclerosis: Assessment of Regional Differences in the Axial Plane within Normal-Appearing Cervical Spinal Cord.

This study shows that the normal-appearing spinal cord in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis demonstrates diffusion tensor imaging changes. This may prove useful in detecting occult spinal cord pathology, predicting clinical course, and monitoring disease progression and therapeutic effect in MS.

Antibiotic use and risk of multiple sclerosis.

Some reports suggest that bacteria, including Chlamydophila pneumoniae, could be involved in the etiology of multiple sclerosis. The authors hypothesize that if true, persons who used antibiotics active against these bacteria, compared with nonusers, might be at lower risk of multiple sclerosis. However this study shows that use of antibiotics active against C. pneumoniae is not associated with a decreased risk of short-term multiple sclerosis.

Potassium channel blockers in multiple sclerosis: Neuronal K(v) channels and effects of symptomatic treatment.

This paper is a review of the current status of basic science and clinical research related to the therapeutic targeting of voltage-gated K(+) channels (K(v)) in MS. Covered are (1) K(v) channel nomenclature, structure, function, and pharmacology; (2) classic and current experimental morphology and neurophysiology studies of demyelination and conduction deficits; and (3) a comprehensive overview of clinical trials utilizing 4-AP and 3,4-DAP in MS patients.

Novel Oral Therapy Suppresses Immune Attack in MS Model

source: US National MS Society

Researchers report success in treating a mouse model of multiple sclerosis with a novel oral treatment. This strategy has shown effectiveness in treating humans with similar diseases via intravenous administration. Hirofumi Ochi, MD, PhD, Howard L Weiner, MD (Harvard’s Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston) and colleagues present this study in Nature Medicine (2006 May 21; [Epub ahead of print]).
