Pseudobulbar affect in multiple sclerosis: Toward the development of innovative therapeutic strategies

This paper reports that in a fixed combination with quinidine, dextromethorphan is effective in treating Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) (a condition involving involuntary and uncontrollable episodes of crying and/or laughing) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and preliminary results suggest that this therapy is also effective in treating MS-related PBA.

Stroke after initiation of interferon-beta treatment for relapsing-remitting disseminated white matter disease

This paper reports the case of a 34-year-old female patient satisfying the McDonald criteria of multiple sclerosis. After introduction of INF-beta treatment, she developed an ischemic cerebral infarction. All diagnostic evaluations and the clinical course revealed evidences for a primary angiitis of the central nervous system. The authors then discuss the possible worsening due to inappropriate INF-beta treatment in cerebral angiitis.

Glatiramer acetate in treatment-naive and prior interferon-beta-1b-treated multiple sclerosis patients

This study shows that prior IFN-beta-1b treatment does not negatively influence the efficacy, safety, or tolerability of subsequent glatiramer acetate therapy. Switching to glatiramer acetate can benefit patients who discontinue IFN-beta therapy.

Reduced thalamic and cerebellar rest metabolism in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, a positron emission tomography study: Correlations to lesion load.

This study applied Positron Emission Tomography to a group of recent RR-MS patients with low disability, suggesting that demyelinating lesions in MS mainly have a remote effect on cortical, basal ganglia and cerebellum metabolism and that regional cortical compensatory mechanisms may be observed concurrently.

Cognitive impairment in newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis patients: A 4-year follow-up study

This is a 4 year follow-up study of cognitive functions in newly diagnosed MS. At the end of the observation 33-34% of the patients had cognitive impairment. Thirty percent of the patients were on disablement pension, 34% received social services in relation to work and 13% had home care. Methodological problems are discussed, especially the practice effect and the importance of identifying sensitive and stable test measures.
