Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Interferon-beta1b treatment modulates cytokines in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis.

This study explores the immunological effects of interferon teatement in PPMS. PPMS patients demonstrated a different pattern of cytokine release from T cells compared to patients with RRMS.

authors: Dressel A, Kolb AK, Elitok E, Bitsch A, Bogumil T, Kitze B, Tumani H, Weber F.

IVIG enters the central nervous system during treatment of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and is localised to inflammatory lesions.

This study investigated the role of Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in reducing relapses in RRMS, using a rat model of MS. It was found that IVIG can only cross the blood brain barrier into the CSF (fluid around the brain) in areas where the barrier is damaged by inflammation.

authors: Jorgensen SH, Storm N, Jensen PE, Laursen H, Sorensen PS.

Localization of grey matter atrophy in early RRMS : A longitudinal study.

This study in early RRMS investigates areas of irreversible tissue loss, or atrophy. Atrophy was not present at the start of the study but developed over the two year period, and the amount of atrophy related to the clinical status of patients.

authors: Audoin B, Davies GR, Finisku L, Chard DT, Thompson AJ, Miller DH.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme I/D gene polymorphism and risk of multiple sclerosis.

This study explores the role of polymorphisms in the ACE (Angiotensin-converting enzyme) gene in susceptibility to MS. Deletions of this gene were found to be commoner in male patients with MS than in healthy controls.

authors: Lovrecic L, Ristic S, Starcevic-Cizmarevic N, Jazbec SS, Sepcic J, Kapovic M, Peterlin B.

Increase of CD8+ T-effector memory cells in peripheral blood of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis compared to healthy controls.

This study in 16 patients with MS found an increase in certain immune cell subtypes (CD8+) in MS compared to controls in the blood, but a decrease in these cells within the brain fluid (CSF).

authors: Haegele KF, Stueckle CA, Malin JP, Sindern E.
