Sex ratio of multiple sclerosis in Canada: a longitudinal study
This Canadian study found that over the last 50 years a greater proportion of females than males have been developing MS and hypothesize that this is due to environmental factors, which if identified, could be addressed.
authors: Orton SM, Herrera BM, Yee IM, Valdar W, Ramagopalan SV, Sadovnick AD, Ebers GC; for the Canadian Collaborative Study Group.

Clustering of autoimmune diseases in families with a high-risk for multiple sclerosis: a descriptive study
This study found that autoimmune diseases commonly run in families of people with MS, suggesting a general susceptibility to this type of disease, and that in families where this was the case, there was a link with the CTLA4 gene.
authors: Barcellos LF, Kamdar BB, Ramsay PP, Deloa C, Lincoln RR, Caillier S, Schmidt S, Haines JL, Pericak-Vance MA, Oksenberg JR, Hauser SL.

Novel Olig 1-coding variants and susceptibility to multiple sclerosis
The authors identified new variants in the Olig1 gene, involved in remyelination after injury, but found no evidence to support the hypothesis that genetic variation in Olig1 influences susceptibility to multiple sclerosis.

Disruption of neurofascin localization reveals early changes preceding demyelination and remyelination in multiple sclerosis
The authors found altered expression of neurofascin, a molecule involved in normal fast nerve conduction, in the brains of people with MS in areas of demyelination. This enhances our understanding of the underlying pathological processes.
authors: Howell OW, Palser A, Polito A, Melrose S, Zonta B, Scheiermann C, Vora AJ, Brophy PJ, Reynolds R.

ACTRIMS meeting focuses on search for biomarkers in MS
source: US National MS Society
Researchers have long wished for a simple blood test or other tool to diagnose and track the course of MS, or to detect the effectiveness of therapies. The search for this kind of easily detectable signal, or “biomarker,” is heating up, as evidenced by presentations at the 11th annual meeting of ACTRIMS (Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis), held on 8 October, 2006 in Chicago, USA.
