Multiple sclerosis with and without CSF bands: clinically indistinguishable but immunogenetically distinct

This study suggests that patients with and without oligoclonal bands, which are markers of inflammation commonly found in the spinal fluid of patients with MS, may have different genetic subtypes.

authors: Imrell K, Landtblom AM, Hillert J, Masterman T.

Baseline MRI predicts future attacks and disability in clinically isolated syndromes

This seven year study in 156 patients with a single clinical episode suggestive of inflammation showed that MRI performed at the initial presentation could be used to predict the chances of conversion to clinically definite MS.

Sequential maintenance treatment with glatiramer acetate after mitoxantrone is safe and can limit exposure to immunosuppression in very active, relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis

This paper on 27 patients suggests that continued use of Glatiramer Acetate may prolong the immunosuppressive effect of mitoxantrone in patients with active relapsing remitting MS, and may allow a reduction in initial mitoxantrone therapy.

Low dose treatment with the synthetic cannabinoid Nabilone significantly reduces spasticity-related pain : A double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over trial

This report on 13 patients who took a synthetic cannabinoid called Nabilone showed a reduction of pain on the drug, but no effect on other symptoms. The drug was considered safe and easily administered.

Protecting axonal degeneration by increasing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide levels in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis models

This study presents work in a mouse model of MS. Results suggest that Nicotinamide administration may protect axons from degeneration, even if given late, and may be a potential treatment for MS.
