Making Connections
Madrid06 conference - still places left!
There are still some places left at the international conference on September 26 in Madrid, taking place just prior to ECTRIMS. The Madrid06 conference, titled "Research in MS: from basic science to quality of life", is aimed at people affected by MS, health professionals and MS society staff and volunteers.
Leading international MS specialists will present the current developments in MS research in an accessible, less scientific format.

Progressive resistance exercise for people with multiple sclerosis
This study investigated the impact of a progressive resistance exercise programme performed twice weekly over ten weeks on nine MS patients. There was a significant improvement in arm strength, leg endurance, and fast walking speed in the subjects, who also felt that the influence of MS in determining their physical function was decreased.

Oral fingolimod (FTY720) for relapsing multiple sclerosis
This study tested Fingolimod, an oral immunomodulator, against placebo to reduce disease activity in 281 patients with RRMS, as measured by a reduction in gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI. Over a six month period and twelve month extension, the Fingolimod-treated groups had lower relapse rates and less gadolinium enhancement on MRI. There were a variety of adverse events associated with the treatment, including one case of encephalopathy.

Are initial demyelinating event recovery and time to second event under differential control?
This study sought to find clinical predictors for how much patients recover from an initial demyelinating event, and for how long the period was until a second demyelinating event. In the 186 patients studied, more severe onset and polyregional presentation predicted a less complete recovery from a first event, and non-white ethnicity and age below 30 years predicted a higher risk of a second attack over the one year study period. The authors suggest that having distinct predictors for the two outcomes may indicate that recovery and time to second event are under separate biologic control.

Relapses and subsequent worsening of disability in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
This study investigated whether relapses contribute to the development of sustained disability in patients with RRMS, using data from 256 patients. The results showed no consistent evidence that relapses which occurred during the study period of ~2.5 years caused a sustained increase in EDSS (a clinical scale used to measure disability) over this period.
