Myelin repair: the role of stem and precursor cells in multiple sclerosis

Stem cell research is a new and exciting area, which is currently under ongoing development. The authors review recent progress explaining how stem cells may be able to help to repair myelin damage in MS.

authors: Chandran S, Hunt D, Joannides A, Zhao C, Compston A, Franklin RJ.

An investigation of the retinal nerve fibre layer in progressive multiple sclerosis using optical coherence tomography.

This study used OCT to look at the thickness of the retinal nerve fibres in the eye in people with progressive types of MS. They found that people with secondary, and to a lesser extent primary, progressive MS had a thinner nerve fibre layer reflecting loss of axons, which is the process thought to cause disability.

Altered functional and structural connectivities in patients with MS: a 3-T study.

The authors combined two new MRI techniques to link structural damage in the motor pathways of people with MS to brain reorganization, thought to help limit disability.

Normal-appearing white matter in multiple sclerosis is in a subtle balance between inflammation and neuroprotection.

The authors looked at which genes are expressed in the brain white matter in people with MS and found evidence that both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes are at work.

Possible link between genes and types of MS

New research announced there may be an association between certain genes and the severity of MS.
