Combination therapy with interferon Beta-1b and azathioprine in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. A two-year pilot study

A two-year study of azathioprine combined with IFNB-1b was carried out in 10 SPMS patients who had not responded well to IFNB-1b alone. The findings showed that: 1) combination therapy was safe and generally well tolerated; 2) annual relapse rate was reduced and there was a significant trend for EDSS increase; 3) there was a significant improvement in neuropsychological tests after 2 years; 4) total lesion load measured by MRI decreased at 12 and 24 months.

Relation of vision to global and regional brain MRI in multiple sclerosis.

This study found that vision test scores, using faint low contrast plates, which detect subtle abnormalities of the visual pathways, were linked to MRI lesion load in people with MS. The authors suggest that these visual tests may therefore be useful outcome measures for clinical trials.
