Making Connections

International collaborators identify new genetic risk factors for MS

The International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC) has identified two new genetic variations associated with MS, completing the largest replicated whole genome scan (scan of all the genes in the body) for multiple sclerosis to date. Deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic area is more effective than nucleus ventralis intermedius stimulation for bilateral intention tremor

The authors looked at the impact of deep brain stimulation in different sites in the treatment of severe tremor in people with MS. They found that stimulation in one of these areas seems to be of some benefit in treating this symptom.

Predictive value of clinical characteristics for 'benign' multiple sclerosis

The authors looked for clinical predictors of a benign course of MS after 10 years. They found that an earlier benign course of disease with low disability and relapse number at five years seemed to be associated with a good prognosis.

Chronotherapy using corticosteroids for multiple sclerosis relapses

The authors compared daytime and night-time use of steroids to treat relapses in people with MS. Surprisingly they found that the night-time treatment was more effective and better tolerated.

MRI criteria for multiple sclerosis in patients presenting with clinically isolated syndromes: a multicentre retrospective study

The authors tested the recently proposed MRI criteria to diagnose MS in people after only one clinical attack. They found that these new criteria were useful for the diagnosis and simple to apply.
