2007 Evelyn Nicholson Award Winner

Susana Carballido Perdigon Nicholson award winnerMSIF is delighted to announce that this year's winner of the annual Evelyn Nicholson Award for International Caregiver, which is made in recognition of the outstanding commitment and devotion of a volunteer caregiver to a person, or people, with MS, is Susana Carballido Perdigón from Uruguay.

Contrasting potential of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite to mediate oligodendrocyte injury in multiple sclerosis

The authors looked at the possible role of nitric oxide in the damage of myelin producing cells in MS. They found that a nitric oxide derivative could be involved in the pathogenesis of this disease.

Effect of early interferon beta-1a therapy on conversion to multiple sclerosis in Iranian patients with a first demyelinating event

In this Iranian study, the authors looked at the effects of early treatment with Interferon beta in patients at their first clinical episode suggestive of MS. They found it to have positive effects both from a clinical and an MRI point of view.

In vivo assessment of cervical cord damage in MS patients: a longitudinal diffusion tensor MRI study

The authors looked at the development of cervical cord damage in people with MS, using a recently developed MRI technique. They found it to be useful in evaluating and monitoring cord damage over time in different subtypes of MS.

HLA-DRB1*1501, -DQB1*0301, -DQB1*0302, -DQB1*0602, and -DQB1*0603 alleles are associated with more severe disease outcome on MRI in patients with multiple sclerosis

The authors investigated the complex genetic component in the development of MS. They found that some genetic patterns were correlated with more severe MRI abnormalities.
