2007 Charcot Award winner: Professor Alastair Compston PhD, FRCP

Alastair CompstonThe 2007 winner of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation’s prestigious biennial Charcot Award for a lifetime achievement in research into the understanding or treatment of multiple sclerosis is Professor Alastair Compston.

Professor Compston was selected from an outstanding field of candidates by an international panel of experts from MSIF’s International Medical and Scientific Board, chaired by Professor Alan Thompson.

Recognition for the Evelyn Nicholson Award for International Caregiver of the Year 2006

Winner of the MSIF Evelyn Nicholson Award for International Caregiver of the Year 2006, Maria Fleta from Gniezno in central-western Poland, was recently honoured by the Gniezno District Authorities for the continued caregiving and support she provides for her husband, Marek.

The patient knows best; significant change in the physical component of the multiple sclerosis impact scale (MSIS-29 physical).

The authors evaluated the reliability of a recently introduced scale for assessment of disability in people with MS, finding it to be useful over time and suitable for use in clinical trials.

Cognitive function in relapsing multiple sclerosis: Minimal changes in a 10-year clinical trial

The authors studied the cognitive performance of patients with relapsing MS over 10 years. Interestingly, they did not find any significant cognitive deterioration in these patients.

Cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors and fatty acid amide hydrolase are specific markers of plaque cell subtypes in human multiple sclerosis

This study on brain tissue samples found that cannabinoid receptors may play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis as they were found to be widely present within the areas of demyelination.

The Margrét Björgólfsdóttir Memorial Fund gives donation to the MS Society of Iceland

On March 1, the MS Society of Iceland recieved a 20 million ISK (230,000 EUR) gift from The Margrét Björgólfsdóttir Memorial Fund. The gift will help to build a new wing to the MS Daycare Center in Reykjavik.
