Over the last 17 months, MSIF and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been gathering epidemiology and service delivery data from countries around the world for the WHO/MSIF Atlas of MS publication. This data has also been presented on the Atlas of MS website at www.atlasofms.org. We now need your help to gather more.

ICOS gene haplotypes correlate with IL10 secretion and multiple sclerosis evolution

This study addressed the complex role of genes in MS, finding that a specific genetic pattern could reduce the number of clinical episodes in people with relapsing MS.

fMRI changes in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients complaining of fatigue after IFNbeta-1a injection

The authors, using a recently introduced MRI technique, looked at the fatigue occurring in people with MS after injections of interferon-beta. They found it to be caused by dysfunction of specific brain areas.

EU legislation to facilitate stem cell derived treatments one step closer

The European Parliament has backed a compromise package on a proposed EU regulation on advanced therapies, including those derived from stem cells. The proposed EU Regulation will facilitate development of those treatments as it will replace 27 national regulatory frameworks with the one EU framework. Additionally, after a hard battle, the decision on ethics of treatment derived, for example, from human embryonic stem cells, is finally left to member states.

More than 10,000 researchers and practicing neurologists from around the world gathered at the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Boston, USA from April 28-May 4. Well over 200 presentations were about multiple sclerosis.
