Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Degenerate TCR recognition and dual DR2 restriction of autoreactive T cells: Implications for the initiation of the autoimmune response in multiple sclerosis.

The authors found some differences in the function of immune cells between people with and without MS that may play a role in the pathogenesis of MS.

authors: Zhang X, Tang Y, Sujkowska D, Wang J, Ramgolam V, Sospedra M, Adams J, Martin R, Pinilla C, Markovic-Plese S.

The role of iron dysregulation in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis: an Egyptian study.

Iron imbalance has been associated with inflammation. The authors investigated the role of iron metabolism in MS and concluded that iron overload and upregulation of iron-handling proteins can contribute to the pathogenesis of MS.

authors: Abo-Krysha N, Rashed L.

Gene expression analysis of interferon-{beta} treatment in multiple sclerosis.

The authors found that IFN-beta induced the expression of a large number of genes at the beginning of treatment. Additional studies are needed to clarify which changes in gene expression can account for the immunomodulatory and clinical effects of treatment with IFN-beta.

authors: Sellebjerg F, Datta P, Larsen J, Rieneck K, Alsing I, Oturai A, Svejgaard A, Soelberg Sørensen P, Ryder LP.

Oligodendrocyte-specific protein is encephalitogenic in rhesus macaques and induces specific demyelination of the optic nerve.

The authors investigated the role of Oligodendrocyte-specific protein in the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, the animal model of MS. They found that this protein caused selective demyelination of the optic nerve in rhesus monkeys.

authors: Bajramovic JJ, Brok HP, Ouwerling B, Jagessar SA, van Straalen L, Kondova I, Bauer J, Amor S, Hart BA, Ben-Nun A.
