Autumn 2008 Du Pré Grants deadline approaching

Every year, MSIF offers up to ten Du Pré Grants of between £1-5000 to young MS researchers to enable them to undertake short visits to other MS research centres, either to learn more from each other or to carry out parts of joint research projects. The aim is to encourage cross-fertilisation of skills through collaborative research projects.

Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Functional cortical changes of the sensorimotor network are associated with clinical recovery in multiple sclerosis.

The authors used functional MRI to study changes in activation of the brain in areas related to movement in people with MS after an acute motor relapse. They found different patterns of activation of various areas depending upon whether patients were using their affected or unaffected hand.

Recombinant interferon beta or glatiramer acetate for delaying conversion of the first demyelinating event to multiple sclerosis.

The objective of this review was to assess whether immunomodulatory drugs prevented conversion from clinical isolated syndrome to MS. Interferon-beta was shown to prevent a second attack after two years of follow-up. This is consistent with what we know about interferon preventing relapses. The authors recommend further analysis of which patient subgroups might benefit.

Quantitative magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the entire human cervical spinal cord and beyond at 3T.

MR spectroscopy is an MRI technique which provides information about the biochemistry of the brain. Due to technical challenges spinal cord spectroscopy has rarely been used. In this study the authors proposed a way to solve these problems in order to assess the cord with this technique.

Glatiramer acetate after induction therapy with mitoxantrone in relapsing multiple sclerosis.

In this study, initial short-term treatment with mitoxantrone followed by 12 months of daily glatiramer was compared with glatiramer alone in people with MS. The addition of mitoxantrone decreased Gd-enhanced lesions and the relapse rate, but not measures of disability. The authors suggested that this treatment could be an option in severe MS.
