Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Validation of a novel biomarker for acute axonal injury in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

The authors studied a protein in the blood in the animal model of MS and found that it was a good marker of damage to nerve fibres in the brain. They suggest it may be helpful to assess the effect of neuroprotective therapies in the future.

Impact of fluoxetine on the human brain in multiple sclerosis as quantified by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging

In this preliminary study, the authors used MRI techniques to investigate the effects of fluoxetine, an antidepressant medication, on preventing damage to brain cells in people with MS. They found that it may be neuroprotective although further, larger studies are needed.

Combination therapy of lovastatin and rolipram provides neuroprotection and promotes neurorepair in inflammatory demyelination model of multiple sclerosis

The authors studied the effects of combining two experimental treatments in the animal model of MS. They found that they may be neuroprotective and even promote repair of the nervous system.

Expression of TWEAK and its receptor Fn14 in the multiple sclerosis brain: implications for inflammatory tissue injury

This study showed that specific components of the immune system contribute to inflammation and tissue injury in people with MS, and therefore provide a potential target for new treatments.

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and multiple sclerosis amongst offspring

The cause of MS is not known but many factors have been implicated including environmental factors. The authors found that maternal smoking during pregnancy was not associated with MS in their children.

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency in patients with multiple sclerosis

This interesting study is the first report of an association between abnormalities of the veins of the central nervous system with the occurrence of MS. More work is required to determine the significance of this observation.
