Deadline for Du Pré Grant 15 February 2008

Each year we offers up to ten Du Pré Grants to young MS researchers enabling them to undertake short visits to other MS research centres, either to learn more from each other or to carry out parts of joint research projects.

The deadline for the first round of Du Pre Grants is Friday 15 February, 2008.

Find out more about Du Pré Grants on our Research Awards page.

Corticosteroids for the long-term treatment in multiple sclerosis.

This review summarises findings from studies done on the role of steroids in the long term management of MS. It concludes that there is not enough evidence to suggest that steroids are useful in delaying progression to long term disability.

Homogeneity of active demyelinating lesions in established multiple sclerosis.

This post mortem study on 27 subjects with MS demonstrated a uniformity of immunopathological findings in brain lesions across subjects. To some extent this argues against a previous hypothesis that there are four separate immunopathological lesion types, with individual patients exhibiting only one type of lesion.

Disability and T2 MRI lesions: a 20-year follow-up of patients with relapse onset of multiple sclerosis.

This study follows patients who presented with a single episode suggestive of an MS relapse twenty years ago. It suggests that MRI scans done at presentation and in the first few years afterwards may help to predict clinical course.

Botulinum Toxin A Detrusor Injections in Patients with Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity Significantly Decrease the Incidence of Symptomatic Urinary Tract Infections.

This study in 30 patients with bladder problems common in MS suggests that injection of Botulinum toxin into the bladder muscle helps to reduce the frequency of urinary tract infections, probably secondary to an improvement in bladder function.

Impairment of movement-associated brain deactivation in multiple sclerosis: further evidence for a functional pathology of interhemispheric neuronal inhibition.

This study from several European centres examines control of hand movements in 56 people with MS using functional MRI. The authors conclude that in MS there is impairment of mechanisms which inhibit nerve function, and this may reduce movement control.

authors: Manson SC, Wegner C, Filippi M, Barkhof F, Beckmann C, Ciccarelli O, De Stefano N, Enzinger C, Fazekas F, Agosta F, Gass A, Hirsch J, Johansen-Berg H, Kappos L, Korteweg T, Polman C, Mancini L, Manfredonia F, Marino S, Miller DH, Montalban X, Palace J, Rocca M, Ropele S, Rovira A, Smith S, Thompson A, Thornton J, Yousry T, Frank JA, Matthews PM.
