Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Campath 1-H treatment in patients with aggressive relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis.

This open label study of Campath-1-H showed that it is very effective at preventing relapses in the small minority of patients with relapsing-remitting MS who have early aggressive disease. However there was a higher risk of side effects than with conventional treatments.

Pregnancy, delivery and birth outcome in different stages of maternal multiple sclerosis.

Pregnancy, delivery and birth do not affect long-term prognosis in women with MS. This retrospective study looked back at birth outcomes, compared to when the diagnosis of MS was made. They found that having a baby after MS was diagnosed was associated with lower birth weights, but that did not have any negative effects on the babies, in terms of numbers of complications or interventions.

A three-year, multi-parametric MRI study in patients at presentation with CIS.

This large multi-centre study looked to see if advanced MRI techniques were able to predict which patients with clinical isolated neurological syndromes would go on to develop MS. Whilst the techniques were able to detect more subtle abnormalities than conventional MRI, they were not able to predict subsequent MS.

The therapeutic plasticity of neural stem/precursor cells in multiple sclerosis.

The authors review current thinking about the role of adult neural stem cells in MS. They emphasise the importance of achieving a better understanding of how these cells, which are found in healthy brains as well as people with MS, function differently in health and disease.

Long-term benefits of exercising on quality of life and fatigue in multiple sclerosis patients with mild disability: a pilot study.

This study found that exercise is beneficial for people with MS, improving fatigue and quality of life scores, as well as improving exercise capacity. The benefits were still evident 3 months after the formal exercise programme had finished.
