Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Longitudinal magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging of primary progressive multiple sclerosis patients treated with glatiramer acetate: multicenter study.

This analysis of a subgroup of patients from the PROMiSe trial (Trial of glatiramer acetate therapy in primary progressive MS) who underwent spectroscopy imaging showed that there was no differences in metabolite concentrations in the brains of patients who were treated with glatiramer acetate and those that were not. This suggests that treated patients did not derive any protection from the drug.

authors: Sajja BR, Narayana PA, Wolinsky JS, Ahn CW; the PROMiSe Trial MRSI Group.

Cervical Spinal Cord Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis: T1-weighted Inversion-Recovery MR Imaging with Phase-Sensitive Reconstruction.

This study has identified that a specific MRI sequence (T1-weighted Inversion-Recovery) may have an advantage over two other commonly used sequences for detecting spinal cord lesions in MS.

authors: Poonawalla AH, Hou P, Nelson FA, Wolinsky JS, Narayana PA.

Effect of exercise training on quality of life in multiple sclerosis: a meta-analysis.

This review consolidates previous research findings on the effect of exercise on quality of life in MS, and found that exercise was associated with a small improvement in quality of life.

authors: Motl RW, Gosney JL.

Cerebrospinal fluid brain specific proteins in relation to nitric oxide metabolites during relapse of multiple sclerosis.

This study measured bio-markers for glial activation and axonal damage (part of the inflammatory and degenerative processes in MS), and nitric oxide metabolites in the spinal fluid of 34 patients within 2 weeks of clinical relapse. They found an increase in nitric oxide metabolites which correlated with reduced clinical recovery, and with certain biomarkers. This suggests that nitric oxide metabolites may be partly responsible for sustained disability in MS.

Mitoxantrone as induction treatment in aggressive relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis: treatment response factors in a 5 year follow-up observational study of 100 consecutive patients.

Of 100 patients with aggressive relapsing-remitting MS treated with mitoxantrone for six months, 78 were relapse free for one year, and reduction of relapses and disability was sustained over five years. Three patients developed asymptomatic cardiac dysfunction and one patient developed leukaemia which remitted with treatment.

authors: Le Page E, Leray E, Taurin G, Coustans M, Chaperon J, Morrissey SP, Edan G.
