Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis

The author reviews the recent advances in the research about optic neuritis, one of the commonest initial symptoms in MS. A recently introduced technique, useful in quantifying the neuronal loss in the optic nerve following an episode of optic neuritis, is also discussed.

Functional neuroimaging in multiple sclerosis with radiolabelled glia markers: Preliminary comparative PET studies with [(11)C]vinpocetine and [(11)C]PK11195 in patients

The authors employed a new imaging technique in people with MS. They found that this technique is able to detect specific cells in the brain, named glial cells, and that it can be a marker of brain damage in MS.

Responsiveness and predictive value of EDSS and MSFC in primary progressive MS

The authors compared two widely used measures of disability in MS, the MSFC and the EDSS, in a group of patients affected by the primary progressive form of disease. Over two years they found the EDSS to be more responsive, although neither scale measured at baseline was very effective in predicting clinical deterioration over time.

Therapeutic vaccination with a trivalent T-cell receptor (TCR) peptide vaccine restores deficient FoxP3 expression and TCR recognition in subjects with multiple sclerosis.

The authors, using parts of abnormal immunological cells, developed a vaccine which could be potentially effective in people with MS. This preliminary study on 23 patients showed that therapeutic vaccination promoted a positive immunologic response, which was effective in counteracting the inflammatory reaction which characterizes the disease.
