2008 Global Dinner Party - Caitlin’s Story
My name is Caitlin, I am 11 years old and I have had MS since I was seven. Sometimes I get scared that I will lose my eyesight or get sick and not be able to walk and I will have to go to the hospital. I have to get a needle every second day that some times hurts but it helps me not get sick. Most times my life is pretty normal and I get to do normal things. I tell my story to other people because I HOPE they would like to donate for research so that we can find a cure and that no other kids or adults will have to spend their whole life with MS." Caitlin Kernaghan, Ontario, Canada

The role of SVZ-derived neural precursors in demyelinating diseases: From animal models to multiple sclerosis
The authors review the role of stem cells, found in the brains of adults, in the process of myelin repair in animal models of multiple sclerosis, and in post-mortem studies in people. Preliminary studies suggest that these cells are activated in response to the disease process and contribute to the repair of demyelinated lesions. Further studies are needed to shed light on the nature of their action.

Autologous mesenchymal bone marrow stem cells: Practical considerations
The authors explain the practical problems related to the auto-transplantation of stem cells from the bone marrow of people with MS. They conclude that this treatment is now considered safe enough to be tested in a pilot study in people.

Epstein-Barr virus genotypes in multiple sclerosis
The authors studied whether infection with different types of Epstein-Barr virus, which may possibly be implicated in the development of MS, had a clear association with the disease, but they found none.

Validation of linear cerebral atrophy markers in multiple sclerosis
The authors evaluated which MRI measures of enlargement of the ventricles of the brain were reliable metrics of brain volume loss in people with MS. They found that one of these measures was useful in monitoring brain volume loss over time.

A genome scan in a single pedigree with a high prevalence of multiple sclerosis.
In this genetic study, the authors looked at the genetic features of an unusual family in whom MS seems to be much more strongly inherited than usual. They found some specific genetic patterns involved in immune system control which might contribute to developing a predisposition to MS.
