Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
NMO-IgG predicts the outcome of recurrent optic neuritis.

The authors investigated the role of a specific antibody in people who had at least two episodes of optic neuritis but had not developed MS. They found that the presences of these antibodies predicted poor visual outcome and the development of Neuromyelitis optica which is a different inflammatory condition.

authors: Matiello M, Lennon VA, Jacob A, Pittock SJ, Lucchinetti CF, Wingerchuk DM, Weinshenker BG.

Statin treatment of adult human glial progenitors induces PPARgamma-mediated oligodendrocytic differentiation.

Statins, cholesterol-lowering drugs, may help remyelination. The authors investigated the role of these drugs in the development of oligodendrocytes which are the cells that make myelin. They found that statins have a complex effect but do seem to increase development of oligodendrocytes. More studies are needed to clarify how this might help patients.

B7-H1 restricts neuroantigen-specific T cell responses and confines inflammatory CNS damage: Implications for the lesion pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.

The authors investigated how a molecule which is involved in the immune system affects brain inflammation in mice. They found that the molecule contributed to reducing inflammation and therefore limiting damage.

Cooling via one hand improves physical performance in heat-sensitive individuals with Multiple Sclerosis: a preliminary study.

This preliminary study showed that hand cooling resulted in a modest improvement in walking distance in people with MS with temperature sensitive symptoms. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding.
