Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Combining beta interferon and atorvastatin may increase disease activity in multiple sclerosis.

The authors looked at combination treatment with interferon beta 1a and atorvastatin in people with MS. Surprisingly they found that people who took both medications had more relapses and more activity on MRI.

authors: Birnbaum G, Cree B, Altafullah I, Zinser M, Reder AT.

Fatigue, depression and progression in multiple sclerosis.

Magnetic resonance imaging as a surrogate outcome for multiple sclerosis relapses.

In this negative study, the authors looked to see if contrast enhancing lesions on MRI predicted clinical relapses during the following year in people with MS. They concluded that they were not useful as predictors.

Abnormalities in the cerebrospinal fluid levels of endocannabinoids in Multiple Sclerosis.

The authors investigated the role of endocannabinoids which are molecules involved in inflammation, in the pathogenesis of MS. They found low levels of them in the spinal fluid of people with MS and the levels varied depending on the activity of the disease, which may suggest a role in limiting inflammation.

Relapses in multiple sclerosis are age and time-dependent.

The authors retrospectively studied relapse rate in people with relapsing-remitting MS over 20 years. They found that the number of relapses decreased with age and over time, which may be useful when deciding on timing of treatment.
