Varicella-zoster virus in cerebrospinal fluid at relapses of multiple sclerosis.

It is thought that MS is caused by a complex interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, possibly such as viruses. In this study from Mexico, the authors identified the virus which usually causes chicken pox and shingles in the spinal fluid of people with MS during relapses. They hypothesize that it may be involved in the pathogenesis of MS.

Lesion distribution in children with clinically isolated syndromes.

The authors compared MRI characteristics in adults and children with MS. They found that the pons, part of the brainstem, was more often involved in children, especially boys, and conclude that this might be due to the pattern of myelination as the brain matures.

Induction of systemic TNFalpha in natalizumab-treated multiple sclerosis.

The authors investigated the effect of natalizumab, a recently developed treatment for severe relapsing-remitting MS, on the expression of cellular signaling molecules. Most were unaffected except for TNFalpha, which the authors hypothesize may be involved in fatigue.

Comparison of the effect of two types of acupuncture on quality of life in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis: a preliminary single-blind randomized controlled trial.

This small study looked at whether there was any evidence that acupuncture was beneficial for people with secondary progressive MS. They compared Chinese acupuncture and used minimal acupuncture as a control condition. There were no differences except that the minimal acupuncture group reported improved psychological scores.

Variation of serum uric acid levels in multiple sclerosis during relapses and immunomodulatory treatment.

This small retrospective study found that uric acid levels in blood were lower during MS relapses and higher in people on treatment. They hypothesize that it might reflect disease activity in some way.
