Proteomic analysis of active multiple sclerosis lesions reveals therapeutic targets.

In this interesting paper, the authors looked at the different pathological patterns of MS lesion in post-mortem specimens. They identified proteins that were present in each of the different types. Many of the proteins were of unknown function, but some present in chronic active plaques were known to be involved in coagulation and inflammation pathways. They inhibited these proteins in the mouse model of MS with clinical benefit. The authors suggest that this is a good way of identifying new targets for potential treatment in MS.

Pluriformity of inflammation in multiple sclerosis shown by ultra-small iron oxide particle enhancement.

The authors describe a new technique of demonstrating inflammation on MRI scans. This may help to define more clearly the different patterns of inflammation which are seen in individual patients, including perhaps which areas will be repaired.

Cognitive impairment in different MS subtypes and clinically isolated syndromes.

The authors studied changes in information processing in people with the different subtypes of MS. Understanding what stage this occurs at, and what processes it impacts upon, might make it possible to treat this aspect of the condition better in future.

A 3-year longitudinal study of cognitive impairment in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis: Speed matters.

This study looked at information-processing in patients with the primary progressive type of MS. They found that the condition primarily affects the speed at which this can be performed.
