Psychopathological and cognitive effects of therapeutic cannabinoids in multiple sclerosis: a double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover study

Medicines derived from cannabis have been tried for pain and spasticity in people with MS in trials. In this study the authors investigated the side effects of cannabinoid treatment. They found that side effects were not a problem at therapeutic doses but could be at higher doses.

Association of the PPARgamma gene polymorphism Pro12Ala with delayed onset of multiple sclerosis

The pathogenesis of MS is complex and genes play a role. In this study the authors found that certain genes involved in regulation of the immune system could also be involved in the age of onset of MS.

The acute and chronic relapsing phases of chronic relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (CR EAE) are ameliorated by the peroxynitrite decomposition catalyst, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrinatoiron (III) chloride, (FeTPPS)

In MS the pathology may involve chemical reactions called oxidation. In this study the authors investigated the effects of a molecule which prevents oxidation in experimental animal models. They found benefits when it was given before the disease started, which is hopeful but future studies are now required in people.

Mastery, functional disability and perceived health status in patients with multiple sclerosis

People with MS sometimes live with some level of disability, which may be due not only to physical dysfunction but also to mood disturbances. In this study the authors found that people with effective control strategies coped better with both physical and mood symptoms, and this was especially important in older people.

Effects of rivastigmine on memory and cognition in multiple sclerosis

In this placebo-controlled clinical trial the effects of rivastigmine in people with MS with cognitive dysfunction were tested. No significant benefits of the medication were observed and both the placebo and treatment groups improved during the study.
