Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
The results of two multicenter, open-label studies assessing efficacy, tolerability and safety of protiramer, a high molecular weight synthetic copolymeric mixture, in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

This preliminary study looked at the effects of Protiramer, a new medicine similar to Copaxone, in treating people with MS. They found that brain inflammation measured with MRI was reduced and it was safe. Further, larger studies are now needed.

Brain atrophy evolution and lesion load accrual in multiple sclerosis: a 2-year follow-up study

The authors used MRI to study brain volume changes in people with MS over 2 years. They found some changes in grey matter but white matter remained stable.

Fatigue in multiple sclerosis is associated with the disruption of frontal and parietal pathways

The authors used MRI to investigate the relationship between fatigue and the location of lesions in the brain in people with MS. They found that specific parts of the brain were related to fatigue.

Clean intermittent self-catheterization in persons with multiple sclerosis: the influence of cognitive dysfunction

Clean intermittent self-catheterization can be a useful bladder management technique for some people with MS. The authors found that people were able to learn the skill despite other MS related problems.
