Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
Genetic variation in the KIF1B locus influences susceptibility to multiple sclerosis

The role of genes in the pathogenesis of MS is complex. The authors found an association with a gene involved in damage of the nerves rather than the myelin sheath.

Heterogeneity in response to interferon beta in patients with multiple sclerosis: a 3-year monthly imaging study

It is known that beta-interferon reduces relapses by a third. The authors investigated the effect that it has on reducing inflammation on MRI in people with MS. They found that MRI activity was actually reduced by a half.

Favorable effect of immunomodulator therapy on bone mineral density in multiple sclerosis

Steroids, which are sometimes used to treat relapses in MS, can cause osteoporosis. The authors investigated the effect of beta-interferon and glatiramer on bone density. They found that these treatments prevent bone loss.

Evaluation of the safety and efficacy of sildenafil citrate for erectile dysfunction in men with multiple sclerosis: a double-blind, placebo controlled, randomized study

This preliminary study of treatment with sildenafil (Viagra) in people with MS showed some improvements compared with placebo on erectile dysfunction. Whilst the authors concluded that there was not enough evidence to recommend its routine use in MS, some people did find benefit.

The effects of interferon beta-1a on proton MR spectroscopic imaging in patients with multiple sclerosis, a controlled study, preliminary results

The authors used spectroscopy, an MRI technique, to assess the effect of beta-interferon on brain inflammation in people with MS. They found some differences after starting treatment, suggesting benefits on brain metabolism.

Sample sizes for brain atrophy outcomes in trials for secondary progressive multiple sclerosis

Brain volume on MRI is an important outcome measure when testing new treatments. In this technical paper, the authors studied the number of people with secondary progressive MS who would need to be enrolled in a trial, in order to show a treatment effect.
