Research News

Summaries of all the latest research findings on MS selected by a team based at the Institute of Neurology, London.
The OPTimization of interferon for MS study: 375 mug interferon beta-1b in suboptimal responders

The authors studied safety and effectiveness of high dose beta-interferon in people with MS who did not respond to standard treatment. They found that higher doses of beta-interferon were more effective in reducing inflammation on MRI but further studies are needed to see if this reduces relapses.

authors: Durelli L, Barbero P, Bergui M, Versino E, Bassano MA, Verdun E, Ferrero B, Rivoiro C, Ferrero C, Picco E, Ripellino P, Viglietti D, Giuliani G, Montanari E, Clerico M; for the OPTIMS Study Group

Interferon-beta(1b) in multiple sclerosis: effect on progression of disability and clinical markers of treatment response

This study compared progression of disability in people with relapsing-remitting MS on beta-interferon with a control group from years ago who were not taking treatment. They reported that interferon delayed progression of disability over five years, although this was not a placebo controlled trial. They also found that the number of relapses in the early years predicted early relapse on beta-interferon treatment.

Vanishing MS T2-bright lesions before puberty: a distinct MRI phenotype?

The authors studied MS in children. They found differences in the brain MRI appearances in those with earlier onset of disease. In particular in children with early onset, lesions were more likely to disappear over time.

Flupirtine as neuroprotective add-on therapy in autoimmune optic neuritis

The authors studied the effects of flupirtine, a treatment usually used for chronic pain, in animal models of optic neuritis. They found that this medication seemed to protect retinal nerve cells. Further studies are needed to assess its effects in MS.
