Glatiramer acetate after mitoxantrone induction improves MRI markers of lesion volume and permanent tissue injury in MS

In this randomised single-blind study, the authors demonstrated that mitoxantrone followed by glatiramer was more effective in suppressing inflammation on MRI than glatiramer on its own.

FTY720 therapy exerts differential effects on T cell subsets in multiple sclerosis

In this study the authors found changes in the T cells in the blood, a type of cell involved in the immune response, in people who received a new tablet medication called FTY720 which is under investigation in MS.

Decrease in the numbers of dendritic cells and CD4+ T cells in cerebral perivascular spaces due to natalizumab

Natalizumab is a new medication for MS, which is very effective at reducing inflammation but can have serious side effects. In this pathological study the effects of natalizumab on certain areas of the brain were investigated and differences in the immune cells were found, which might partly explain the prolonged effects of the medication.

The association of nocturnal serum melatonin levels with major depression in patients with acute multiple sclerosis

In this uncontrolled study depression in people with MS was investigated and found to be related with levels of a hormone called melatonin. This might be useful in designing future treatments.

Spinal cord grey matter lesions in multiple sclerosis detected by post-mortem high field MR imaging

In this study pathological specimens were compared with MRI. The authors reported that spinal cord MRI appears particularly sensitive to detecting grey matter lesions in MS.

Quantitative PCR for Epstein-Barr virus DNA and RNA in multiple sclerosis

The causes of MS are complex and viruses may play a role. In this study the authors compared the levels of Epstein-Barr virus present in the blood of people with MS and healthy controls. There were no differences between the two groups.

Spectrum of pediatric neuromyelitis optica

The authors of this study described the clinical features of a group of children with neuromyelitis optica, a very similar disease to multiple sclerosis. They concluded that early diagnosis is important in order to start treatment to improve the outcome.
