Dirty-appearing white matter in multiple sclerosis : Preliminary observations of myelin phospholipid and axonal loss

This small study links pathology and MRI findings in a specific type of white matter abnormality seen in MS.

Longitudinal changes in myelin water fraction in two MS patients with active disease

The authors report a new MRI sequence which may be useful in identifying remyelination in MS lesions. Larger studies are now needed.

Cognitive impairment and structural brain damage in benign multiple sclerosis

The definition of benign MS is controversial. The authors reported that cognitive difficulties were associated with more abnormalities on MRI even in people said to have benign disease. They suggest that normal cognition should be added to the definition of benign MS.

Lovastatin induces the formation of abnormal myelin-like membrane sheets in primary oligodendrocytes

Statins are drugs used to lower cholesterol and may have effects on inflammation. The authors studied their effects on oligodendrocytes, the cells which make myelin, in the laboratory. There were complex effects on myelin and more work is needed to understand how they might affect people with MS.

Single dose of methylphenidate improves cognitive performance in multiple sclerosis patients with impaired attention process

In this preliminary study the authors looked at the effects of a medication used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in people with MS. They found some improvement in attention tests soon after taking the medication. Whether this is sustained is unclear.
