2008 McDonald Fellowships and Autumn Du Pré Grants announced

MSIF are pleased to announce the annual McDonald Fellowships for 2008 have been awarded to Andrea Mike, Hungary, Georgina Arrambide, Mexico and Ya-ou Liu, China. The Autumn Du Pré Grants have been awarded to Amir Hadi Maghzi, Iran, and Camilla Reali, Italy.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis: study of factors involved in a possible development towards multiple sclerosis

The authors studied acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a demyelinating disease which typically occurs in children, and found that 27% of people developed MS afterwards.

CTLA4Ig treatment in patients with multiple sclerosis: an open-label, phase 1 clinical trial

This preliminary study looked at a new intravenous MS treatment. It appeared to be safe and there were no serious side effects but further larger studies are needed to prove whether it is effective in MS.

Identification of soluble TREM-2 in the cerebrospinal fluid and its association with multiple sclerosis and CNS inflammation

The authors studied a molecule involved in inflammation found in the spinal fluid. They found that people with MS have higher levels of it and suggested that it could be a target for future treatment.

Comparison of subcutaneous interferon beta-1a with glatiramer acetate in patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (the REbif vs Glatiramer Acetate in Relapsing MS Disease [REGARD] study): a multicentre, randomised, parallel, open-label trial

This study compared treatment with beta-interferon and glatiramer acetate in people with relapsing-remitting MS. No differences were found between the two treatments.

The impact of stressful life events on risk of relapse in women with multiple sclerosis: A prospective study

The role of stress in MS is debated and it is a difficult subject to study objectively. The authors investigated women with relapsing-remitting MS and they found that the duration of stress might be related to relapses.
