I have no intention of slowing down or stopping my career. I protest my MS every day and I would like people to do the same in a positive way. You can’t predict what is going to happen with MS and I’d hate it to take away anything from my life.

HLA class I and II alleles and response to treatment with interferon-beta in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

MS is a complex disease and genes may play a role in its pathogenesis. The authors of this article aimed to study whether some genes involved in the pathogenesis of the disease could also be involved in the response to interferon beta.

CASP-9: A susceptibility locus for multiple sclerosis in Italy

In MS a number of pathological mechanisms to explain the damage of the brain tissue have been proposed. According to this, it has been shown that the activity of a specific protein involved in the survival of brain cells plays a major role. The authors of this study have demonstrated that certain variations in the gene of this protein may also be playing an important role in the development and the severity of MS.

Prevalence and impact of pain in multiple sclerosis: physical and psychologic contributors

The authors of this work aimed to look at the functional impact of pain in people with MS. They not only found that the pain was highly prevalent but also that its functional impact was influenced by pain intensity, physical health, and emotional functioning. For this reason the authors propose to also investigate these factors in order to achieve a better understanding and control of pain in MS.

New options for early treatment of multiple sclerosis

In MS it is known that pathologic changes responsible for the later increase of disability may occur from the onset of the disease. In this review, Tintoré highlights the beneficial effects of starting disease-modifying treatment for MS before tissue changes and disability appear.

Cognitive reserve protects against cognitive dysfunction in multiple sclerosis

It has been shown that some degree of cognitive decline may appear in MS. However, the high variability regarding these cognitive symptoms is not fully understood. In other neurological diseases it has been proposed that personal cognitive background could play a role in the variability of cognitive disturbances. The authors of this work aimed to investigate whether personal background could play a role in MS. They found that previous individual cognitive function might be important, especially regarding complex cognitive tasks.
