Autologous non-myeloablative haemopoietic stem cell transplantation in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: a phase I/II study

This preliminary study investigated the safety and efficacy of stem cell transplantation in people with relapsing-remitting MS who did not respond to beta-interferon. It was found that it stopped progression and improved disability. However, some important side effects were reported. Further and larger studies are needed to confirm these results.

Effect of plasma exchange in accelerating natalizumab clearance and restoring leukocyte function

Treatment with natalizumab, a new medication for aggressive relapsing-remitting MS, can uncommonly induce a progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which is a very serious condition. The authors found that plasma exchange can clear natalizumab from the blood, and concluded that it may be a potential treatment in cases of PML.

Immunoglobulins and complement in postmortem multiple sclerosis tissue

The authors compared the inflammation in the brain of people with MS to that occurring in other neurological conditions. They found a specific pattern in MS lesions which may be significant in the pathogenesis of MS.

Direct visualization of remyelination in multiple sclerosis using T2-weighted high-field MRI

This article reports that MRI scans obtained using a very high field magnet (9.4 T) can detect remyelination, suggesting that high-field MRI can be useful in studying people with MS.
