Azathioprine for multiple sclerosis

The objective of this study was to review studies of azathioprine, a drug which strongly suppresses the immune system, in treating MS. Although it reduced the relapse rate and progression at three years, there was a risk of potentially serious side effects. Further studies are needed to determine its role in the treatment of MS.

Lovastatin induces the formation of abnormal myelin-like membrane sheets in primary oligodendrocytes

Statins are drugs used to lower cholesterol and may have effects on inflammation. The authors studied their effects on oligodendrocytes, the cells which make myelin, in the laboratory. There were complex effects on myelin and more work is needed to understand how they might affect people with MS.

First clinical study on ultra-high-field MR imaging in patients with multiple sclerosis: comparison of 1.5T and 7T

This study compared conventional strength MRI to scans which used a much more powerful magnet in people with MS. It was found that the latter technique was more precise in detecting and defining brain lesions.

Assessment of citrullinated myelin by 1H-MR spectroscopy in early-onset multiple sclerosis

The authors used spectroscopy, an MRI technique, to study people in the early stages of MS changes and found changes in myelin which had previously been identified later in the course of the condition.
