MR-elastography reveals degradation of tissue integrity in multiple sclerosis
The authors have studied a group of people with MS and a group of healthy volunteers by means of a new MRI technique called MR-elastography, to detect subtle diffuse brain abnormalities which cannot be detected by the conventional MRI but which may be involved in the clinical worsening seen in people with this disease. As significant differences were seen between the group of people with MS and the healthy controls, the authors proposed this technique, which describes the viscoelastic properties of the brain tissue, as a possible tool for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment response in people with MS.

Quantitative assessment of brain iron by R2* relaxometry in patients with clinically isolated syndrome and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis has been traditionally considered as an inflammatory-demyelinating disease of the central nervous system especially affecting the white matter. The presence of iron in the brain has been also shown to play a role in the disease. The authors aimed to investigate the presence of iron in the brain of people with MS, by means of a new MRI technique. They found that the accumulation of iron seemed to be especially relevant in the grey matter, mainly in the grey matter from deep regions of the brain (basal ganglia), and that this accumulation was greater in people with longer disease duration and grey matter tissue loss, supporting a relationship between iron deposition and the evolution of the disease. Though further studies need to be done regarding the role of iron deposition, the authors suggested that this could be contributing to the appearance of the progressive phase of the disease.

Measures in the first year of therapy predict the response to interferon {beta} in MS
IFN beta is one of the first line treatments for relapsing-remitting MS. As not all patients have a satisfactory response to IFN beta, the development of criteria addressed to identify those patients who will have future treatment failure is essential, in order to be able to offer them other treatment options as soon as possible and avoid losing valuable time. The authors have found that the combination of clinical (presence of relapses, progression or both) and MRI data (presence of active lesions) at one year after starting IFN treatment, may help us to identify those people who will have a treatment failure in the following two and three years.

Cognitive deficits in multiple sclerosis patients with cerebellar symptoms
Some people with MS may develop a level of cognitive dysfunction over the disease course. In this study, the authors found that people with MS and with symptoms suggestive of cerebellar involvement had more pronounced cognitive dysfunction in specific domains such as attention and verbal fluency, than people with MS lacking cerebellar symptoms. For this reason, the authors suggested that cerebellar symptoms in people with MS should be assessed carefully in clinical practice, in order to perform a neuropsychological evaluation as soon as the need arises.
