The UK Government's Department of Health has told NHS trusts that they must continue to fund disease modifying drugs – the beta interferons and glatiramer acetate – for people with MS who stand to benefit.
Following a series of cases where trusts refused to pay for the drugs because of funding problems, the UK MS Society pressed the Department of Health to confirm that the original commitment still applied.
The Department has now issued a briefing clearly stating that, “there is a statutory duty… to fund treatments for eligible patients, including those who are not subject to routine monitoring.”
