On the first World MS Day MSIF launched a global campaign film in ten languages and more than 220 events and activities took place in 67 countries.
39 personalities provided statements in support of World MS Day including FC Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi, who scored in the Champions League final that took place on World MS Day and Lori Schneider, the first woman with MS to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Full quotes can be found here.
Raising awareness through media coverage
Widespread media coverage was achieved by both MSIF and MS societies. BBC Arabic TV featured an interview with Mai Sharawy, from the Egyptian MS Society. Greek composer Mimi Plessas and Peer Baneke, MSIF CEO, were interviewed for WNYE FM, USA. Danny Wallace, former Manchester United football player, spoke out in support of the day and was interviewed for BBC Radio 5. In addition, national TV coverage was achieved in Argentina, Barbados, Denmark, Ireland, Mexico and Sweden.
 Juan Carlos Castaño, who has MS, and TV personality Maria Laura Santillán at the Esclerosis Multiple Argentina open day in Buenos Aires, which was featured on several TV channels.

Highlights include:

In Chile, members of Agrupación de Esclerosis Multiple gave out green apples in the street to promote good health and provide a message of hope.
 The Montenegro MS Association produced a stamp for nationwide public use.
 In Stuttgart, Germany, the Deutsche Multiple Sklerose Gesellschaft launched a new advertising campaign featuring Aida, a woman with MS.
 In Mumbai, the MS Society of India organised a human chain and a talk, which was attended by medical professionals and people with MS.
A member of the Scottish Parliament tabled a motion regarding MS Day, MS Society Scotland and the Scottish Shine On campaign, as previously featured on May 12 2009.
MSWorld launched a cognitive-based memory video game "The Case of the Missing Matches."
The European MS Platform launched the Pocket Guide to the European Code of Good Practice in MS
The MS Trust, UK, launched a new website StayingSmart to support people living with MS who experience cognitive difficulties.
